He would live his early life in the Bishop Hill Colony, attending school and having various jobs as an ox boy, black smith, and in paint shops. When the American Civil War kicked off, Olof mustered unto the Union Army, receiving a disability charge in 1862.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eOlof, now Olof Krans, had lived his days post-war as a house painter and interior decorator after settling in Galva, Illinois. After suffering a fall in 1896, he began to paint memories of his youth and daily life in Bishop Hill.
